Melendez was one of two people shot at the university on Saturday, Oct. 28. The second person was rushed to an area hospital and underwent emergency surgery to save their life, the Worcester District Attorney said. Their name was not released.

Neither of the victims nor the suspect attended Worcester State University. It's unclear why they were on campus.

Police are searching for Kevin Rodriguez, 18, of Lawrence, for the shooting. Rodriguez faces charges of charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and armed assault with intent to murder. He should be considered armed and dangerous.

Melendez's family created a GoFundMe to help pay for his funeral.

Hi. My name is Sashira Belfort step mother of Randy Melendez Jr our son was taken from us too soon only few days after his 19th Birthday and it’s the worst nightmare any family can Go threw. Our son was a great kid hardworking who loved being around friends and family. He loved spending his spare time at home with his family. We are going threw the hardest time of our life and wouldn’t wish this on anyone.

The fundraiser has collected nearly $7,000 of its $10,000 goal.

It's unclear what sparked the argument at the Chandler Street campus around 2:30 a.m. that led to the shooting. Police are still investigating what sparked the confrontation.

Police ask anyone with information on what happened Saturday night or who knows where Rodriguez to contact  Massachusetts State Police at 508-453-7589 or the Massachusetts State Police Fugitive Apprehension team at 800-527-8873.
